A Mix of Art and Science: Interdisciplinary Learning at ISBe

Making connections while learning is the best feeling ever. Class 8 really enjoyed making those connections when we linked together our Science and Art projects. We started off by learning about reproduction in flowering plants and this was a cool topic in itself but when Mr Luka (Science teacher) told us that he had talked to Mr Bob (Art teacher) about somehow linking the two subjects together we were all very excited.

The type of artist that Mr Bob used had a lot of close ups in flowers so when we were drawing he could identify the parts of the flower that we saw in Science as well. We could also choose the type of flower that we wanted to create so that was a great experience.

It was a really great visual for us to paint these flowers. Check out some of the painting class 8 made:

As you can see we looked much more closely at the inside of the flower rather than the beauty of the outside. We saw exactly how the plants have these structures in art and how they use them in science. It was a great experience for me. Here are some of the things my fellow classmates said:

“It was cool to link two subjects together”- Haripratiik

“It was a nice idea to link art and science because after we learned about flowers in science it was even easier for us to draw it and it was a fun time” – Ahana

“So the science chapter was fun, but then we also added an art aspect to make it more fun.The art made us understand a visual side rather than a scientific one and helped us understand what was where” – Yash

“We had a lot of fun experiences in science when we heard we were learning about the flowers in science and we were painting flowers in art. We were thrilled and it was a lot of fun.” – Annisha

As you can see it was a great experience for us and class 8 would definitely like to do this again.
