AD 900

What holds an empire together? Perhaps it is faith, perhaps it is dependency or perhaps it is leadership. But the bigger they become, the more difficult they are to hold together…

In C5 students study about three ancient civilizations. The most recent one is the Kingdom of Benin. After locating the kingdom on the map and discovering the Benin beliefs, students had a look at the Benin art.

We know that art was very important to the people of the Kingdom of Benin because the Oba (King) kept control of it. He supervised wood and ivory carving, and the casting of brass. The people would make plaques, heads and statues. The artists made their work only for the Oba and he rewarded them with gifts in return.

C5 recreated some artefacts of the Benin culture out of clay.
