C5 had a strong start of this school year.
We have started to look at ‘energy’ and its relation with the environment, creating links to the current climate issues and the increased pressure is being put on the Earth’s valuable and dwindling resources. Using the ‘Scientific method’ students tested different hypotheses such as ‘Does a Cloudy Day Affect Solar Energy Generation?’ And ‘ Do greenhouse gases increase the Earth’s temperature?’
The latest Class 5 research focused on the air that we breathe. They used strips of wax paper, smeared with a thin layer of petroleum jelly, in different locations and placed them under the microscope. Students analysed the differences on each strip between the various locations. It was very interesting to see that some of the particles on the outdoor detectors were from plants and trees, but the others will in part likely be caused by some form of pollution.
The class took the role of ‘green ambassadors’ so serious that they are currently working on a new project – creating a storybook suitable for younger children, to help educate them about an endangered species and climate issues, that they will read to Early Years.
