The Humanities department has been buzzing with activity this term.
Senior School
Class 10 embarked on a captivating workshop organised by an external provider that focused on cultural differences and identities. The session provided students with a deeper understanding of diverse perspectives, gearing them up to host their workshops for classes 7-12 in January.
Class 9, guided by Mr. Matt, learned to calculate the walkability of an area using advanced mathematical approaches. This interdisciplinary approach not only enhanced their mathematical skills but also demonstrated the real-world applications of their academic knowledge.
Classes 11 and 12 left their mark at the Brussels School of Governance with their insightful questions during a talk on the EU Green Deal. Their engagement demonstrated not only their knowledge of global issues but also their commitment to understanding the complexities of policies that shape our world.
Meanwhile, Class 11 engaged in insightful panel discussions, delving into the impacts of globalisation, the effectiveness of overseas development aid in addressing complex needs, and the complex nature of humanitarian intervention. Challenged to adopt diverse perspectives, they worked hard to craft viable solutions, and showcased their ability to navigate complex issues.
Middle School
It has been great to see amazing work happening in the middle school social studies classrooms. From students working on their projects and source based work to class trips, there is a lot of student engagement and positive energy in our classrooms.
The Class 6 students have completed a section on Early River Civilizations, how the geography influenced these early civilizations lifestyles, their economy and contributions to the world. In maths students were able to experience cross curricular learning as Mr T. introduced measuring systems of the ancient world. We had a very interesting visit to the Royal Museum of Art and History in Brussels to learn more about Ancient Mesopotamia and Ancient Egyptian.
Class 7 has learned about the Renaissance and Protestant Reformation studying how art, astronomy, science, medicine and religion evolved during this period of time. We learned about one of the most influential inventions ever made, the printing press and went to the Plantin-Moretus Museum in Antwerp, a UNESCO Heritage site, to see the oldest working printing press and had a walking tour of historic Antwerp, a major hub of the late-Renaissance.
Class 8 started off the year learning about revolutions. We looked at various different reasons why people revolt and different types of revolutions. We studied the American, French and Russian Revolutions focusing on the cause and effects of these major events. The last few weeks we concentrated on a geography section on Tectonics, which they also learned about in science with Mr. Kiernan. The students created some really amazing projects on Google Earth showing the evolution of a specific coast line, glacier or river.
This is just a peak as to what is happening in the middle school Social Studies classrooms. Look forward to the rest of the school year to continue our learning adventures.
