Awesome Air Resistance and Furious Friction

A couple of weeks ago, Class 2 and 5 collaborated in some collaborative work. They learnt about friction and air resistance. They tested the effect of the air resistance as a force which can affect the speed at which objects move and which sometimes stops things from moving. They also held a ‘flying’ competition’ and discussed why the winning aeroplane was the winner by looking at the shape and how streamlined it is.

Below is even more collaborative work in the form of a write up from some students in Class 2 and Class 5. Check this out:

During this experiment we had lots of fun learning about air resistance and friction! This was a collaboration between Class 5 and Class 2 to learn about friction and air resistance. We did an experiment with a paper envelope. We tested which one would fall on the ground first. We had different types of paper. Both papers were folded in different ways and put in the envelope. We discovered that both papers fell on the ground at the same time. That is because we dropped them from the same height and with the same strength. After this activity, we grouped up in pairs and together, we made paper aeroplanes and had a competition to see which aeroplane flew the furthest. Each student participated in this experiment to find the results. We watched a video explaining what air resistance and friction actually meant.  We learned that the smallest and most pointed paper aeroplane went the furthest because it was able to cut through the air, thanks to its small size and pointed tip. The students who won the aeroplane race were Aryan and Shrey because they had the smallest and most pointed aeroplane which was why their aeroplane travelled the furthest and the fastest.
