Discovering Chocolate!

Wouldn’t it be amazing if chocolate grew on trees? Well, it does! Wouldn’t it be amazing if we were going to make some chocolate? Well, we are!

And we’re going to discover even more amazing things about chocolate! Those of us in class 2 started term 2 following a unit of work on a theme that focuses on “Chocolate”.

We started this long awaited theme with lots of excitement and ideas. The students are reading, researching, writing, illustrating, working on their own and working in groups.

So far, in IPC Geography we discovered where cacao trees are found and the factors affecting the growth of cacao trees.

In IPC History we also found out who first discovered chocolate and who took the first chocolate to Europe. Starting with the Mayans and the Aztecs, followed by the spanish explorer Cortes and Fry’s first solid chocolate bar in 1847, later on John Cadbury and Hershey joined this chocolate journey.

In Science we found out why chocolate wrappers are made from special materials and how to design a wrapper for our chocolate bar while studying ‘International’,we discussed what fair trade chocolate is and what other fair trade products there are. We have linked our IPC theme with Literacy and we are studying R. Dahl’s famous story of “Charlie and the chocolate factory”. The students are eager to earn as many golden tickets as possible!

Although we still have many things to discover about chocolate, our learning journey only gets better and yummier!
