EY Reception. Beach Day and Beach Feet!

As we are unable to go on holiday at present, we in EY reception decided to bring the holiday to us! We creatively turned our classroom into a beach… The children brought their beach bags to school filled with all the essentials for a beach holiday. They lay their towels down, took off their socks and shoes wiggled their toes in the sand and had a paddle in the pool. The children really got into the spirit of the day by wearing hats and sunglasses and even walking with flippers on!

There was much to discover and investigate on our beach. There were shiny oyster shells and smelly seaweed, floating driftwood and coral. Magnifying glasses were used to study the shell patterns closely and smooth pebbles also, which are tricky to walk over.

Later on in the week we read a book called ‘Beach Feet’, on finishing it we thought about how we could retell the story using the resources we have in the classroom. I found some wallpaper that was ‘sand coloured’ and we decided we needed to make foot prints like in the book and decorate the shore with beach items. We then lay lengths of blue fabric for the sea and made, with lego, a lighthouse, boat and life guard station with adjoining cafe. Our representation of the book was quite clear and the children enjoyed narrating what they were doing as they made the ‘loose parts’ collage. See the process and end result in our great photos!
