Lost in a maze – Art at the International School of Belgium

Name maze

The students of class 8 explored the wonderful art of the artist “l’Atlas”. This particular artist studied calligraphy in different countries and cultures, in this way creating his own original fonts. He was particularly interested in the idea of creating a universal pictorial language, a balance between form and letter, between act and intent; a game with endless variations, drawing near and diverging from optical art and the abstract and geometric art movements. In his maze-like geometrical and abstract artworks you will always find his pseudonym hidden somewhere.

The students of class 8 made a canvas painting in the style of the artist l’Atlas. They had to create a geometrical/abstract artwork. However their own name had to be integrated in this artwork and had to be an integral part of their design. The students created their own “geometrical Name Maze” in this manner.

Acrylic paint and the masking tape technique were used to create this artwork.

All of these “Name Mazes” you can find on this page:

Are you able to decipher all the mazes and find the students names?

T-shirt design

The students of class 6 researched the art of the t-shirt designer Ten-Hunderd. He specializes in bright, colorful, imaginative character work. He is inspired by cartoons and anime, street art and graffiti, childlike imagination, comics, world cultures, religions, and folklore. The students learned about fashion design during this project and the differences between art and design.

The students created their own imaginative character and used these as a design for a t-shirt. You can find all the artworks on the following page:

What is your favourite design?

You can find all the fantastic artworks from other projects and other classes on the art website.

Enjoy! I hope you will be able to see all these wonderful works in real life on display in the school during open day on the 18th March 2023 .

Best regards, Bob Van den Broeck
