The Secondary Section Stories 04/10/2024

To our valued parents and ISBe community members,

The past two weeks have been an exciting one for student leadership, as our student council elections brought new energy and expanded opportunities. In a move to involve more students in the leadership process, we introduced a fresh approach: electing one boy and one girl from each class to serve as student council representatives. The enthusiasm was contagious as students campaigned and advocated for their classmates to vote for them.

For grades 10 and above, we took a different route, interviewing all candidates for leadership positions, including those running for President and Vice President. These pairs conducted their own campaigns, showcasing their leadership qualities, vision for the school, and passion for representing their peers.

This year also saw the introduction of exciting new leadership roles within the student council. In addition to the President and Vice President, we now have a Treasurer, Administrative Assistant, and Public Relations Officer, creating even more opportunities for students to take on responsibility and develop valuable skills. We are thrilled to announce the winners of these leadership roles:

– President: Meghna Vijay

– Vice President: Shivaai Mitra

– Treasurer: Daniella Osswald

– Administrative Assistant: Kadi Al Husseini

– Public Relations Officer: Aditi Deshpande

We also formed a support group and events planning group within the student council. As for the members of the student council representatives:

Class 6: Sai Arjune and Anagha Gothal, Class 7: Luke Johnson and Sevita Reddy

Class 8: Lien Al Husseini and Arnav Javeri, Class 9: Nathan Debu and Aadya Shukla

Class 10: Nivaan Joshi and Aarushi Sharma, Class 11: Ruday Ghandi and Tharan Tejas, Class 12: Rahul Nagisetty and Mahi Khambete.

Student leadership extended into our school’s House system, where students were selected for the important roles of House Captain and Vice Captain. These positions give students the opportunity to lead house activities, foster teamwork, and promote a sense of belonging across all grades. As for the name of the winners for each house they are as follows:

Unicorns Captain: Aahil Shaik, Vice-Captain: Jasmine Johnson

Dragons Captain: Navya Agrawal, Vice-Captain: Diya Rendeddula

Phoenix Captain: Tulip Shah, Vice-Captain: Samiksha Vijay

Overall, the past two weeks have been a celebration of student leadership, growth, and learning. We look forward to seeing how these young leaders will shape our school community in the months to come!

In addition to the student council and house leadership roles, our Grade 6 students had an exciting opportunity to showcase their athletic talents during the recent Cross Country event. It was a great chance for them to shine individually and demonstrate their physical endurance.

Meanwhile, Grade 9 and 10 students embarked on an enriching English trip that beautifully complemented their curriculum. As part of their studies in literature, the students attended a live performance of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. This experience was invaluable, as it allowed the students to connect with the text in a more immersive and engaging way. This trip provided a unique learning opportunity, as students were able to experience Shakespeare the way it was meant to be enjoyed—through performance. It also sparked lively discussions afterward, as students reflected on the actors’ interpretations, the set design, and how the live performance altered their perception of the play. Many students commented on how the nuances of Shakespeare’s work became clearer, and the humor more apparent, after seeing it performed. Such real-world experiences help bring literature to life, making it more accessible and enjoyable for students, and this trip will surely leave a lasting impact as they continue their exploration of classic texts.

As we navigate the colder months, we kindly remind you of the importance of keeping unwell children at home. Allowing children time to fully recover helps prevent the spread of illness to their peers and ensures a healthier school environment for everyone. We’ve noticed an increase in persistent symptoms among both students and staff, which suggests that illnesses may be lingering longer than usual this season. To help us maintain a safe and healthy space for learning, we ask that children only return to school once they are fully recovered.

We appreciate your cooperation in prioritising the health and well-being of our school community.

Warm regards,

Tala Issa
