The Primary Section Stories – 28/01

Dear Parents and Carers,

Covid is still hitting the news and has had an impact on classes in school with two or three children being missing from a class at any one time. Often the parent has tested positive and the children as high risk contacts have needed to quarantine. The regulations are changing each week and we will be sharing our responses to the latest updates early next week.

As you may know we have a strong link with Thomas Moore university and at this time of year we offer places to students taking their Masters degrees in International Education. We will have a variety of adult students in school over the next few weeks, building their experience and developing their insights into international education. They will be working and supporting in a variety of classes across the school.

This week we have been carrying out the ISA (international Schools Assessment) practice tests for classes 3, 4 and 5. These tests are online and the students use their Chromebooks. These tests are useful for the school to measure itself against other international schools of a similar type and size, identify any gaps in our curriculum and check for student progression over time. Students cannot study or prepare for them but they do need to be familiar with the test format. We wish all of our students every success for the real assessment in a few weeks time.

At the beginning of this term we have had several entry points for new units IPC and IEYC. EYF walked into a stunning space station in their classroom last Monday. This generated a lot of interest, new vocabulary and new ideas for creative play.  EYR made a cave in their classroom for the dinosaurs to live in. Class 1 had their forces entry point just before the holidays with an exciting tug of war. Over these last few weeks they have investigated all sorts of forces around us. Class 2 got to try out some chocolate for the entry point for their next unit. They were able to identify and describe many different flavours and types of chocolate.

The specialist teachers also have some exciting projects coming up. Class 4 will be making their own compositions in Music and Class 5 will be responding to the work of Artist Romare Bearden in their Art lessons.

Best wishes for the coming week.
