“You must love what you do”: Speakers at IBSe’s Career Panel tell it like it is

On March 4, our class 8 and senior school students had the opportunity to sit in this school year’s first career panel: “I never knew you were interested in THAT!”: Non-Traditional Mainstream Jobs. We were excited and honored to host Toon Schruers, Junior meteorological forecaster, 1st Sergeant of the 40th Squadron Search and Rescue, Belgian Armed Forces and Maggy Toremans, Managing Consultant at Belgian’s largest human resource firm, Acerta.

The speakers shared their stories of how they decided to study for their prospective careers, the determination and work ethic that they needed to put into their career pathway. They spoke about the skills and knowledge needed in their respective fields, as well as how the learning never ends. Both speakers also described the main day to day goals of their jobs.

While our speakers come from very different career backgrounds, they shared a few traits: a passion for their jobs, a willingness to learn and succeed, and a drive to never give up even when the going gets tough. And while their jobs could not be any more different, the jobs shared a main point of similarity as they are both service oriented jobs, making an effort to help people.

Students were able to ask questions at the end of their talks, and the speakers gave generous answers and advice. The common thread in advice in choosing a career was a passion for the job and determination to make it happen.

We have two more career panels to look forward to on March 29 and June 22. Look out for more information and we hope to see you there again!
